Bulghar Wheat and Black Bean Burger

You will need

1 tablespoon olive oil, plus a little extra for brushing More products
1 small onion, diced More products
1/2 cup bulghar More products
1 can black beans, rinsed, drained and mashed More products
1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs More products
1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce More products
1 egg, slightly beaten Available only in our Broughton Street shop More products
2 garlic cloves, minced More products
1/2 cup fresh coriander, minced

3/4 teaspoon ground cumin More products
1/4 teaspoon cayenne More products
1/2 teaspoon pepper More products
1/4 teaspoon salt More products
4 whole wheat rolls

  • Heat the olive oil in a smallish, heavy saucepan over a medium heat
  • Sauté the onion for about 5/6 minutes until golden
  • Add the bulghar to the pan with 1 cup of water or broth
  • Simmer on a low heat until the liquid is absorbed (about 15 minutes roughly)
  • Mix the rest of the ingredients with the bulghar
  • Form into 4 patties
  • Chill for at least 20 minutes (it helps them to bind together)
  • Heat the saucepan again, add a tablespoon of oil and fry the patties for about 5 minutes each side
  • Serve on the rolls with your favourite burger toppings and some home-made mayo. Try a squeeze of lime
