Who are the Soil Association?
Founded in 1946 by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionists who saw a direct connection between farming practice and plant, animal, human and environmental health, The Soil Association are the UK's leading membership charity campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use.
The Association have over 150 staff based in Bristol and Edinburgh and working as certification inspectors across the country.
What does the Soil Association do?
As the UK's leading membership charity campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use, their work is divided into three areas:
Looking to the Future
As climates change and the world population grows, our food and farming systems must change too. The Soil Association seeks to ensure that organic systems can secure a lasting and humane solution to the challenges that face us.
The Association helps provide solutions that enable people to live, eat, farm and grow with the resources that are available; seeking to pioneer new solutions to tackle climate change, support biodiversity and improve animal welfare.
Real Food for all
Good food, real food, the best food, is organically grown, minimally processed, fairly traded, fresh and seasonal. This food should be a right, not a privilege: we want to make sure everyone has access to food that is healthy for them and the planet.
Work done in schools by the Soil Association, through the Food for Life Partnership, shows that food cultures can be changed for the better. Improving the food choices made by children improves the life and health chances of those of children.
Helping Pioneers
The Soil Association represent and work with pioneering farmers, growers and businesses who deliver practical change – the extraordinary people who can make change happen.
By providing technical support and advice to farmers and businesses, and through the trading subsidiary, Soil Association Certification, consumer trust is created to support the organic market.
Working to improve consumer understanding of organic principles ensures that the vision, integrity and trust at the core of the certification process are understood by anyone purchasing a product that carries The Soil Association symbol.
