About Pinhead Oatmeal

Also known as Irish, Scots, Coarse-Cut or Steel Cut Oats. Oats are high in potassium, have useful amounts of calcium and are also a fair source of protein whilst being high in both soluble and insoluble fibre (these are both great for healthy digestion and soluble fibre has been proven to help lower cholesterol). They are also moderately rich in B vitamins, B1, B2 and especially inositol, and their carbohydrates provide a long slow delivery of energy to our systems. They can be useful in preventing heart disease and maintaining healthy circulation. They also contain beta glucans which boost the immune system.

For more information on the types and uses of oats here's our Real Foods guide to oats

Please note: country of origin is Scotland, however on occasion if the product is out of stock with the manufacturer we may use an alternate supplier. In this instance, the origin will be clearly noted on the individual product and will usually still be within the UK.

I bake my own bread using wholemeal flour, yogurt and pinhead oatmeal. I find the price from Real Foods for the latter massively cheaper than my local health food shop and the service is excellent.

Pinhead oats.
First discovered by me in Ireland . Its delicious cooked as you would porridge .
It’s fabulous steeped overnight in a little soya milk or regular milk and eaten as it is, with fruit or with a dollop of yoghurt.
It’s great to make flapjack with.
I simply have to have it !
Oh, and it’s very good for you.
What’s not to like about it?

Pinhead oatmeal is the best type for making real porridge it takes longer but is worth the wait. I make enough for several days and heat in microwave.

I buy this in bulk and have found that I can use it for the whole family. It makes a lovely breakfast for everyone.

Sadly I seem to be getting a lot of grit in mine, big pieces too.  In a 25kg bag I'm expecting quite a few bowls to have grit which means I don't want the kids eating this now as its bad even for my teeth. Thought it was a one off but now felt the need to write a review.

Add oatmeal instead of a third of the breadcrumbs to your favourite stuffing recipe - it will taste wonderful
