About Pinhead Oatmeal

Pinhead oatmeal is also known as steel cut oat groats. A very coarse oatmeal, it can make a very traditional bowl of porridge oats. Pinhead oatmeal can also be used in soups to give more body and used as a topping to a pie, pudding or crumble.

Aberfeldy pinhead oatmeal which you can get in Realfoods (and its rival from Golspie, which you can't) is proper pinhead oatmeal which makes proper Scottish porridge (and the only type of oatmeal to be used, toasted, in Cranachan). The makers of other versions of 'pinhead' (or, in the US, 'steel-cut oats') just take the grinding process a bit too far and then it is just not gritty enough and there is too much oat-flour. Also, both Aberfeldy and Golspie come in paper bags, not horrible plastic.

I have pinhead oatmeal for breakfast every morning and have tried different brands.  Aberfeldy oatmeal is head and shoulders above others in flavour and pleasing texture.
