About Organic Red Quinoa

Quinoa (keen-wah) has been cultivated for over 5,000 years and came from South America. Although classified as a grain it is actually the fruit of the Goosefoot plant. It is a small, round grain and is used in everything from breakfast cereal, soups, stews, salads and breads.

Quinoa seed is high in protein, calcium and iron, a relatively good source of vitamins E, C and several of the B group. Also contains fibre. It has an almost perfect balance of all eight essential amino acids needed for tissue growth. Quinoa is a balanced amino acid source of high quality, complete protein with a low glycaemic index. Quinoa also contains albumin and has no gluten containing ingredients.

Quinoa is a great food to eat as a side dish instead of rice or pasta, as it is low in carbohydrates. It is actually high in protein, making it a very healthy food. By choosing red quinoa, I get the extra phytonutrients in the red pigments.
