About Organic Lerida Figs

Organic Lerida Figs from Real Foods. Dried figs belong to the family Ficus Carica Domestica L. These figs are simply picked, dried, pressed into a flat disc shaped and packaged. The flat disc shape is a type of packing, known as Lerida (the other common shape is usually referred to as natural). These organic figs are sourced from Turkey and have a sweet flavour. They are soft to bite and chewy in texture.

Use figs as a sweet substitute, simply eat and enjoy with no added sugar, just natural sweetness. They make the perfect addition to a cheese board. Dried Figs are delicious chopped up into a cereal mix or in baking, particularly fruit cakes and muesli bars.

Figs are an excellent source of calcium, iron, potassium, and dietary fibre. They are often recommended for people watching their weight as they provide a feeling of fullness and can help reduce hunger and cravings. Figs are also a natural source of prebiotics which can help with digestion and encourage 'good' bacteria in the gut. They also contain high levels of oxalates, these have a laxative effect, which is why many people are advised to eat them regularly, but not too much!

Figs can often develop a white powdery coating which is called sugaring - this is a natural process which is simply caused by the crystallisation of the fruit sugars in the fruit. If you need to freshen up the dried figs that have crystallised, it is easy, just wash them!

We bought these last year to perk up the cheese board at Christmas and they were a huge hit! Really sweet and very nice with sharp cheeses. Also nice as a snack for the kids.

Super tasty figs. Lerida is actually not a variety, but the way the figs are processed. Lerida figs are hand flattened. Great as such to snack on with the tiny seeds that deliciously pop under your teeth, or cut up into salads, blended into smoothies or with some oil and vinegar to make a fig vinaigrette. You can rehydrate them in water or freshly squeezed orange juice, or cook them in a syrup (white wine and maple syrup for example); they then get all plumped up and are great served along side ice cream. You can also add them to savoury dishes like vegetable biryani, couscous, Moroccan tagines...

I love these organic figs and find they make a great mid afternoon snack at the office.

Raw Vegan 3 Minute Fig Jam No Added Sugar Recipe

Summary: Fig jam is absolutely delicious on toast, or served with cheese, especially goat's and blue cheeses. Traditionally, fresh or dried figs are cooked with water and sugar; but I find such fig jams way too sweet. Dried figs are so sweet and tasty already, making this quicker and healthier alternative such a good idea.
