Vegetarian Or Vegan Gravy Recipe

Make your own vegetarian or vegan gravy in minutes this Christmas. Simply replace the wheat flour with rice flour or gluten-free flour of your choice, and replace shoyu soy sauce with tamari to make your gravy gluten-free. The mixed peppercorns really balance the flavours, but you can use black peppercorns too.

You will need

about 30g butter or 3 tbsp melted butter for vegetarian gravy OR Available only in our Edinburgh shops More products
3 tbsp olive oil for vegan gravy More products
3 tbsp wholemeal wheat flour OR More products
3 tbsp brown rice flour for gluten free gravy More products
2 cups of 500ml water or homemade vegetable stock
3 tbsp shoyu soy sauce OR

  • Gently heat the butter or olive oil in a saucepan.
  • Add the flour and stir continuously over low to medium heat until the flour browns.
  • Carefully add the water or stock, stiring until slightly thickened.
  • Simmer on medium to high heat for about 10 minutes or until you reach a lovely gravy consistency.
  • Add the shoyu or tamari and season with freshly ground mixed peppercorns to taste.
