Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Tofu Recipe

The marinade for these Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Tofu slices uses a barbecue sauce for sweetness, tamarind paste for sourness and chilli sauce and red chilli flakes for a spicy kick.

You will need

200 to 300g plain firm tofu, sliced into about 1cm slices More products
about 200ml barbecue sauce More products
2 tbsp tamarind paste More products
Or make your own tamarind paste from whole tamarind pods : open 2 pods and put the flesh and seeds in abowl. Add just enough hot or boiling water to cover and allow to soak for at least 1 hour, then pass through a fine sieve, scraping with a spoon, until you are only left with the seeds and hard fibers in the sieve.
2 tbsp chilli sauce

Method

  • Prepare the barbecue marinade by whisking together the barbecue sauce, tamarind paste, chilli sauce and crushed chillies.
  • Place the marinade in a wide flat dish, and place the tofu slices in the sauce, coating both sides well.
  • Allow to marinate for at least 1 hour, preferably more.
  • Grill for 4 or 5 minutes on each side, brushing with additional marinade.
  • Serve hot with a side salad or grilled vegetables.
