Homemade Whitening Fluoride Free Toothpaste Recipe

If like me, you like to reduce the amount of unnecessary exposure to chemicals, you will have started reducing and rethinking everything in your bathroom. Eco-friendly fluoride free toothpaste brands are a great place to start, but if you want to go even further, making your own toothpaste is fun, cheaper, as just as, if not more efficient. This homemade toothpaste makes good use of the natural antiviral and antibacterial qualities of coconut oil, which fights bad breath and promotes good gum health. Sodium Bicarbonate gently whitens teeth and Xylitol has been proven to help prevent and mend cavities. Add essential oil of peppermint for that familiar freshness. As this toothpaste contains bicarbonate of soda, it is not to be used everyday as it could damage enamel, use every other day at most. Replace half of the bicarbonate of soda with tulsi, or fine sea salt if you plan to use it everyday.

Method

  • Put the coconut oil, sodium bicarbonate and xylitol in a small bowl and mix thoroughly until well combined, using a small teaspoon. Then add the essential oil, and mix again.
  • You can use room temperature coconut oil, as long as it is soft enough to mix the other ingredients in.
  • Keep the toothpaste in your bathroom, just like normal toothpaste. Depending on the temperature in your bathroom, the toothpaste's consistency will change as the coconut oil melts or solidifies depending on the temperature in your bathroom. This does not affect its efficiency. Just stir if needed.
  • Use a little pea of the homemade toothpaste on your dry toothbrush.
