Real Foods was the first shop in Edinburgh to recognise Garvald Bakery’s unique ethos and products.
Over 40 years ago Real Foods became the bakery’s first customer, and are today their largest stockist with the whole range of Garvald’s handmade bread available from Real Foods two Edinburgh shops.
Garvald, recently featured on the ITV show ‘Britain’s Best Bakery’, is no ordinary bakery. It is a small Edinburgh charity based on Steiner principles, that provides adults with learning difficulties the opportunity to develop skills in meaningful work. They also produce a huge variety of delicious, local, handmade bread and cakes!
Located in their Gorgie Workshops, the bakery was one of the very first workshops set up at Garvald Edinburgh. Today a wide range of organic bread and rolls are produced. Garvald “members” are involved in baking, packing and delivery of orders. They must work together as a team to meet deadlines and maintain a consistently high quality in all products.
Just next door to the bakery is the Garvald Confectionery which produces a range of cakes, biscuits and scones. The two groups work together to deliver their wholesome, delicious products to wholefood shops, delicatessens and cafes throughout Edinburgh.
All the Garvald Bakery and Confectionery products are 100% organic as certified by the Soil Association and the flour and other ingredients are supplied by a local worker’s co-operative.
Real Foods stock a wide range of Garvald’s of organic bakery products, cakes and biscuits and receive regular deliveries.
Garvald are very valued member of an increasingly growing number of local and Scottish suppliers that we work with, all part of the rich tapestry of the community we take part in and serve.
Garvald Bakery’s products are and always have been registered organic by Organic Food Federation (GB-ORG-04).
