About Organic Cos Lettuce
Also known as Romaine lettuce in America, Cos lettuce is named so because it is said to have originated on the Greek island of Cos (Kos), off the coast of Turkey. Cos lettuce has been cultivated and eaten cooked or raw for almost 5,000 years and may very well be the oldest form of cultivated lettuce. The leaves are thick, crispy and firm with a stiff central rib. The outer leaves are slightly bitter, but the ones in the centre are sweeter and more delicate.
Cos lettuce is the exception to the lettuce family, as it is a nutritional powerhouse. Cos lettuce is an excellent source of vitamin A, folate, vitamin C, manganese and chromium. In addition, it is a very good source of dietary fibre, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and the minerals potassium, molybdenum, iron, and phosphorus.
Customer reviews
I order this lettuce in frequently, it lasts well, the inner leaves are really crisp and sweet so great for strawberry salad at this time of year and the outer leaves always remind me a little of rocket - they've got that slightly bitter taste to them, great with feta or halloumi cheese
