How to Use Bicarbonate of Soda

Use bicarbonate of soda as a raising agent in baking - combine with acidic ingredients such as yogurt, lemon juice or buttermilk to help breads, cakes and muffins rise. It's also useful for cleaning around the home when mixed with water to create a gentle, effective scouring paste, or sprinkle on carpets and fabrics to deodorise. In cooking, bicarbonate of soda can soften pulses during soaking and speed up cooking times.

Nutritional Benefits

Bicarbonate of soda itself does not provide significant nutrients but adds value as a functional ingredient in recipes. It helps baked goods achieve light, airy texture without affecting flavour, and can support healthy home cooking by enhancing the performance of natural ingredients.

Incredibly useful stuff this bicarb, obviously you use it in baking ( I add 2 spoons of cream of tartar to 1 of bicarb to make my own baking powder) but it also cleans the house without destroying the planet! I think everyone should have it in their house.

Works really well with foil and hot water for cleaning silver - especially good for jewelry with uneven surfaces that are hard to get at.

3 Ingredients Vegan Natural Deodorant Recipe

Summary: This 3 ingredients homemade deodorant is one of the easiest you could ever make. No melting involved, just put all 3 ingredients into a small bowl and mix until everything is well combined. Done in 5 minutes, tops. Coconut oil provides natural odour protection thanks to its antibacterial properties, since body odour is produced as the bacteria on the skin break down the acids in our sweat. Being alkaline, Sodium Bicarbonate raises the pH of the acid mantle (the thin, slightly acidic layer of sweat and sebum on the skin), hence inhibiting the growth of acid sweat-loving, odour-forming bacteria. Cornstarch and Arrowroot both help absorb moisture. You can choose to add an essential oil for scent or one that has antibacterial properties:Lavender wins on both counts. This recipe makes enough to fill a 30ml jar.

Wholegrain Spelt Fruit Carrot Cake Recipe

Summary: This carrot cake uses sprouted wholemeal Spelt flour rather than plain wheat white flour, for enhanced nutrition. The other health boosting secret ingredients in this carrot cake are the bananas and the dried fruits, which help reduce the amount of sugar needed. Also, the bananas make the cake really moist ; it keeps fresh in an airtight tin. The cake is quite indulgent, so small slices are great – it would easily serve 20. Leave the sugar out altogether, if you didn’t want a very sweet cake. If you want a healthier cake with a lower fat content, skip the icing. If you do make the icing, but you want to avoid food colouring, or you don't have a piping bag, you could simply decorate the cake by arranging grated carrot shreds in a pretty pattern on top of the white icing.
