Review of our event on Tuesday 29th March

On Tuesday 29th March, personal trainer Tracy Griffen returned to Real Foods on Broughton Street for a fun evening on the theme of 'Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about health foods… but were afraid to ask'. On arrival visitors were welcomed by Anna from Mama Teas with a delicious cuppa. Then Tracy started her tour of Real Foods with an organic carrot juice sampling and a discussion of the taste and nutritional benefits of organic carrots.

Next on the tasting menu were falafel and fatira made by local producer Ishtar foods. These were very popular and Tracy explained how important protein is in our diets and recommended chickpeas and bean products for maximizing our protein intake. The talk quickly led to coconut products and their multiple health benefits. For example coconut water is full of electrolytes and is excellent for hydration. Whilst coconut oil is packed full of good fats, is excellent for the skin and has a very high burning temperature (meaning you can cook at a high temperature without losing any of the coconut’s health benefits). Visitors sampled coconut oil both for taste and the effect of applying a small amount to the skin.

Then, as Tracy talked about oats being a fantastic source of slow-release energy everyone tasted the yummy uber bars from local flapjack producer Stoats. Uber bars, unlike most flapjacks, are free-from sugar and therefore perfect for a healthy lifestyle or for low-sugar diets. Tracy's talk finished on the subject of ethical shopping and being aware of the different kinds of labels on products.  Afterwards everyone stayed to discuss the talk, sample a range of Stewart Brewing beers (which were very popular) and to do some shopping before leaving with a goody bag. Tash and Connor from Real Foods were on hand to answer questions and provide health advice. It was a great evening full of inspirational tips on healthy eating and ways to improve our lifestyles.

Thanks to all the producers who supported the event: Mama Teas, Biona, Stewart Brewing, Stoats Porridge Bars, Ishtar Foods, Coconoil and Nakd. Most of all thank you to everyone who attended and made this a most memorable event.
