On Tuesday 24th May, we hosted the first of our new Wine Club events at Real Foods on Broughton Street. The theme was 'Summer Wines' and 6 delicious organic wines were presented for tasting with accompanying food from local producers. Our wine expert Rob welcomed those attending with an introductory beginner's guide to the world of organic wines; explaining what makes a wine organic, why independent wine-merchants can provide a better range of organic wines than supermarkets, and some of the developments in organic wines - such as the emergence of 'natural wines' that use minimal processing to produce organic wines. As an apperitif, a light dry Prosecco Frizzante was served with Booja Booja organic hazlenut truffles. This was very popular and led to lively discussions of the differences between Prosecco, Cava and Champagne. A spicy Rosato followed that worked particularly well with the taboulleh that was on offer. The next two wines, East Meridian's Chardonnay and Camino Tempranillo , were the perfect accompaniment with George's locally produced falafel and hummus. The Camino, for its light was very popular. A much fuller red followed, the Merlot Domaine Bassac which, combined with samples of Willie's cacao opened up to give lots of yummy intense flavours. To close the tasting, everyone sampled a dessert wine called Monbazillac 'Cuvee des Anges' with locally grown strawberries from Belhaven fruit farm. This provided a great sweet finish after the rich merlot and the savoury food.
