Father's Day Sunday 20th June 2010

Father's Day is a day honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 55 of the world's countries.  It typically involves gift-giving, special dinners for fathers, and family-oriented activities.

Sadly dad's often get a raw deal with gifts. We suggest this year that you DON'T give him soap on a rope, comedy socks or a clip-on tie (unless he likes them!). Perhaps try cooking him an easy meal like burritos or roasted red peppers with goats' cheese and sweet potato mash, buy him something from our men's range of cosmetics or pick up some of Willie's Cacao to impress him with your thoughtfulness!
We've recently started stocking Stewart's Brewing in both of our stores, locally produced in Edinburgh, they went down a storm at the recent Your Healthy Living Show when we gave out samples. Pop in to either of our stores to see what all the fuss is about, or buy your dad a decent bottle of organic wine and really make him feel appreciated.
The first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been held on June 13, 1910 through the efforts of Ms Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a church sermon at 1909 about the newly recognized Mother's Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition, as well. Her own father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. Enlisting help from the Spokane Ministerial Association in 1909, she arranged for the celebration of fatherhood in Spokane. It took many years to make the holiday official. A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
