Keeping an eye on the pounds
So, you’re still in shock from the Christmas food bill, but drawing your belt in doesn't have to mean going hungry. There are many ways to save money and stretch ingredients and here are our best ideas from Real Foods...
You could try planning ahead with our Manager’s Specials offer. We now publish our Manager’s Specials a week in advance and starting in January we have now wldened our range and are offering two products each day. The products we offer each day as Manager’s Specials are knocked down in price by 50% so can result in quite a saving, especially if it’s something which would make a useful bulk purchase.

If you keep an eye on our
Facebook page (or 'like' us in facebook lingo!) You’ll find these published a week in advance of them going live. Or simply pick up one of our bagstuffer flyers next time you're in one of the shops.
Our packdowns are extremely competitive in price, and as we do them in a range of sizes you can get what you actually need and reduce any wastage. On any given day, we always offer one of our own packdown products as a Manager’s Special, many of which you could buy in bulk and do batch cooking with, such as the
Lentils or
Rice, that’s Dahl and Rice for starters and plenty of it. And, if you’re looking for a cheap and healthy snack to fill those gaps where you need a bit of an energy boost, how about the
dried fruit?
Doing a little more home cooking can help save money especially if you look at
recipes which use relatively cheap ingredients, such as oats. Here’s a great link to a recipe for
bannocks which uses porridge oat flakes (also known as rolled oats) and is available from us straight out of the sack. Or try
sesame pitta sticks, perfect for dipping into homemade
hummus delicious, easy AND cheap! Or try some
sensational squash soups!
With our Manager’s Specials we also try to reflect what our customers might want at certain times of the year, and with the beginning of the year being a time when people start to think more about health and well being, we’ve put in a few products which could help you in this area, and products where a 50% reduction will also save you quite a bit of the folding stuff. If you look at the table showing our Manager’s Specials for 17 January, you’ll see that you could buy
Aloe Vera Juice,
Flaxseed and
Floravital Yeast Free Supplement, all of which contribute to good health and well being.
You could also save money with us by looking out for our daily reduced items. We have reduced produce areas in both our stores, where branded, fresh and chilled goods are often knocked down in price on a daily basis by 25% or more, so keep an eye out for these bargains. A bag of our reduced ‘spotty’bananas would make quite a few
Banana Bread loaves. (Our manager Jenny has honed the recipe! Making it a firm favourite with our staff and customers).
We regularly run other special offers on our products, so keep an eye our in-store publicity, where you’ll find out what products are being offered as a deal. We run a cycle of promotional products throughout the year, which in most cases will be found on the centre aisle as you come in the door at Broughton Street. At Tollcross, you’ll find all the information you need on promotions in their front window.
Update: Finally, why not take advantage of our 10% Early Bird Discount which we have now extended to the end of April. Early Bird times are 8am-10am on weekdays, 9am-10am on Saturdays and 10am-11am on Sundays. All you need to go to get your 10% discount is come in during those hours and register your details either before or after doing your shopping.
Oops, I almost forgot, don’t forget if your are a student in the UK or an OAP you are entitled to a 5% discount on your shopping on presentation of your valid student ID card or OAP bus card. Remember to tell the till operator about your status before they process your shopping.
